Moving Checklist for Success

A smooth move for you and your family starts a month beforehand. Planning is always a good idea when getting ready to move. Preparation before the big day can save time and money. Here are a few helpful hints from Movemart Relocation, INC.

2 to 4 weeks before your move:

  • Visit your local post office and file a change of address.
  • Inform any creditors, magazine subscriptions and any mailing agencies of your new address.
  • Contact any organizations, schools and clubs that you or your family may be affiliated with and notify them of your move.
  • Make a list of items that you will no longer need in your new home and sell, donate or discard those items.
  • Acquire copies of your family’s medical and dental records. Ask your doctors for advise on the move and whom they may suggest in the area you are moving to.
  • Obtain or draw a floor plan for your new home. Determine which items you would you would like to place in what areas of your home. This can save time and frustration when moving in to your new home.
  • Be sure to keep a record of all important names, phone numbers and addresses from your old home. Taking your old phone book with you could be beneficial later on.
  • Transfer your homeowners insurance to your new home.
  • Be sure to let Movemart Relocation know if any aspect of your move has changed. (Closing dates, change in locations, etc…)

1 to 2 weeks before your move:

  • Cancel your regular services such as newspaper delivery and trash pick up. It may also be a good time to schedule dates to have your utilities disconnected.
  • Properly dispose of all flammable items and toxic materials. This could include gasoline cans, paint buckets, aerosol cans, bleach and other cleaning substances.
  • Select the items that you will be personally transporting (personal affects, jewelry, etc…). Pack and set these items in an area so that the movers will know that you plan to take these with you.
  • Use all frozen foods or dispose of them otherwise (donating and giving away)

The day before your move:

  • Organize and pack a box of items you will need immediately upon arrival to your new home. You can take this box along with you or you may have the loading crew place this box on the back of the truck so it can be unloaded first.
  • Defrost and clean your refrigerator. Once this is done make sure to leave it unplugged and with the door open.
  • More than likely this will be the day that your pack crew arrives. They are friendly and will be glad to answer your questions and concerns.

Moving Day:

  • Today is the big day. Make sure that you have a date set with Movemart Relocation so that the driver and unpacking crew can be at your new residence at your convenience. If there are any changes to these dates or time contact our office and we will be happy to work with you.
  • Once the loading is complete do a final tour of your home to ensure nothing has been overlooked.
  • Sign the Bill of lading, inventories and other pert anent paperwork and make sure your new address and contact information are correct.

Move in day:

  • If you can, assure your utilities are connected in your home a day before the move in process.
  • Do a little pre-emptive planning. Figure out what you want to go where. This will save time in the whole process and allow you to settle in as soon as possible.
